Floating Along the Rhine, Gazing at Castles, Stopping by to See Some Shining Armor and Big Guns!

From the Marksburg Battery

The spectacular Rhine River Valley is home to a collection of Medieval Castles. They vary in size and condition, however. most have been destroyed at some point, leaving only ruins for today's viewing.  Although . . . there is an exception:  The Marksburg Castle in Braubach, Germany, dating back to the 13th and 15th century. Even though it rests on a steep hilltop, it has never been destroyed. A section of the castle can be viewed in the photograph above. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Marksburg Castle tour is both interesting and challenging. The large stone and cobblestone lanes and pathways are difficult to walk. Good, comfortable, sturdy shoes are in order. My favorite room was the hall of armor, not sure how any one could move let alone climb on a horse in a suit of armor. They were small people which is indicated by the size of the suits. In addition, the average number of years of life was forty. But they did drink lots of wine during their life time, only because  water quality was an issue not easy to address.

Marksburg Castle also serves as the headquarters of the German Castles Association. This organization oversees the protection and preservation of historic military and residential buildings throughout Germany.
